Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. It manifests as whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, or deeper cysts and nodules. Acne most commonly affects teenagers but can persist into adulthood, particularly in women.

Common Causes
- Excess oil (sebum) production
- Clogged hair follicles by oil and dead skin cells
- Bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes)
- Hormonal changes during puberty, menstruation, or pregnancy
- Certain medications including corticosteroids or lithium
- Diet high in refined sugars or dairy products
- Stress and lack of sleep
Treatments
- Topical retinoids to unclog pores and reduce inflammation
- Benzoyl peroxide to kill bacteria
- Salicylic acid to exfoliate and unclog pores
- Oral antibiotics for moderate to severe acne
- Hormonal therapy for women (birth control pills)
- Isotretinoin for severe, resistant acne
- Chemical peels and laser therapy
Prevention
- Wash face twice daily with gentle cleanser
- Avoid touching or picking at acne
- Use non-comedogenic skincare and makeup products
- Remove makeup before bed
- Maintain a balanced diet and stay hydrated
- Manage stress through exercise and adequate sleep
